A defeat for the Venezia FC Lionesses on their return from the international break, on matchday five of the 2026/27 Serie B Women’s Championship, away to Catania. The match, played at 3:30 pm at the “Comunale” stadium in Nesima (Catania), ended 3-1, with the hosts taking the lead in the first half, holding firm against the pressure from the orange-and-black side and managing to score twice more in the second half. Petruzzelli’s team fought until the end and pulled one back late on through Volpatti, but were unable to get back into the game.

The first chance of the match came in the 2nd minute, when Tamburini entered the box and shot at goal. The ball struck the post before going out. Venezia responded in the 12th minute, with Cavicchia crossing into the box for Zuanti, who headed the ball narrowly wide. Catania tried again in the 19th minute through Tamburini, but Scotti was alert and comfortably dealt with her header. In the 27th minute, the Lionesses pushed forward again, with Zuanti breaking down the left wing and crossing into the centre of the box, but the home defence managed to clear the danger at the last moment. In the 38th minute, the incident that shaped the match took place: following a scramble in midfield, a high ball was sent towards the orange-and-black penalty area. Tamburini managed to control it and beat Scotti to make it 1-0 to Catania. Before the break, Ballo tried her luck for Venezia with a long-range effort, but it failed to trouble the opposing goalkeeper. The teams went into half-time with the score at 1-0.

The Lionesses tried to take control of the game straight after the break, with Pizzuti attempting a shot that was deflected behind for a corner. Venezia continued to press forward and, in the 25th minute, first threatened through a shot by Salvi, which was again deflected for a corner by the opposing defence, and then, following the corner, with a long-range effort from Airola, saved by Frigotto. In the 28th minute, the orange-and-black side came closest to getting back into the game: Donda received the ball from Imprezzabile and unleashed a powerful shot towards the far post, narrowly missing the target. In the 44th minute, Catania doubled their lead through Robbins, who expertly capitalised on a cross from the right and beat Scotti with a header. Venezia pushed forward in search of a goal, but just a few minutes later, the hosts scored a third on the counterattack, with Teern timing her run to beat the offside trap before defeating Scotti. Late on, the orange-and-black side scored to make it 3-1, as Volpatti headed the ball into the net, effectively bringing the match to a close. The Lionesses will return to action on Saturday, 24 October, at 3:00 pm, at home against Vicenza.
